Head of Department
Background
The Department of Animal Health and Production is as old as college it’s self in that it was established in February 1977. Initially it was known as the Department of Animal Health and Husbandry. Since its establishment, the Department has engaged in training students in the field of Agriculture leading to certificates in poultry production, OND, ND, HND etc., with the aim of self-employment, as well as middle level manpower requirements of various agricultural organizations. Students are drawn from within and outside the state.This programme is designed to produce technicians who will be able to apply generalized scientific knowledge and skills in livestock care and increase production. Products of this programme shall be able to operate medium scale livestock farms, carryout associated products, identify sings of disease processes in livestock and apply necessary first aid measures. They can also carryout routine preventive measures and meat inspection and follow up prescribed veterinary medical treatment.
Assist veterinary surgeons in veterinary clinics, laboratories and farms, and serve as extension workers capable of influencing to livestock farmers the modern techniques of increased animal production.


PROGRAMMES AND COURSES UNDER THE DEPARTMENT
The Department offers Diploma and Higher National Diploma for both regular and part time students. This include Diploma in Animal Health and Production, Higher National Diploma in Animal, Higher National Diploma in Animal Production Technology. Part time programmes include certificate in poultry, Diploma in poultry, HND in Livestock Production, and HND in Poultry Production. The Programmes and the Courses are described below.

HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN ANIMAL HEALTH (AH)
This programme is designed to produce Animal Health Superintendents capable of assisting and completing the work of veterinaries in Animal Health care delivery. A product of this programme should be able to carryout routine preventive measure such as identifying early signs of disease processes. Apply necessary medication under minimum supervision and follow-up veterinary medical instructions, etc.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Application with all of the following qualifications may be considered for admission into the Higher National Diploma Programme by direct entry.
- The minimum entry requirements for National Diploma programme in Animal Health and production
- The national Diploma with a minimum of lower credit pass in Animal Health and production Technology
- A minimum of one year Post National Diploma cognate work experience in the field of specialization.

HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN ANIMAL PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY (APT)
This programme is designed to produce technically competent work force to meet the national requirements in the areas of Animal Production. A product of HND in Animal Production Technology should be able to plan, establish and manage livestock farms and carryout associated production processes including dairy production. Egg production, hatchery processes and to identify early signs of animal diseases and follow up prescriber veterinary instructions.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The general requirements for the HND Programme include:
- All the entry requirements for admission into ND programme in Agricultural Technology
- A minimum of lower credit pass in ND programme
- A minimum of one year cognate work experience
